Abstract

Pericardial tamponade is a medical emergency caused by fluid accumulation in the pericardium, which compresses the heart and impairs its ability to function properly. Transesophageal echocardiography is commonly used to diagnose pericardial tamponade in the immediate postoperative period after cardiac surgery, in the monitoring of structural procedures and in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation.
