The Gerbode type defect is defined as an abnormal communication between the left ventricle and the right atrium, which can be congenital or acquired. Congenital defects are associated with alterations in the NKX2-5, GATA4, and TBX5 genes, while acquired defects, which are increasingly common, are of iatrogenic, infectious, traumatic, and ischemic etiology. We present the case of a 25-year-old man with a history of previous heart surgery in whom a Gerbode defect was diagnosed, without accepting surgical treatment.
