In the era of percutaneous coronary intervention, interventricular septal rupture after acute myocardial infarction has become a rare complication; however, it is still associated with high mortality reaching 94% in patients treated conservatively and 47% in patients undergoing cardiac surgery procedures (30-day mortality). The optimal time for its closure and the most convenient modality continue to be controversial. There are factors that have been associated with increased mortality and each case must be individualized and treated by a multidisciplinary team.
