Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a highly prevalent valve disease, usually considered benign. However, in a subgroup of patients it is associated with an unfavorable clinical course, ranging from severe valvular insufficiency to sudden death from arrhythmic cause. In this article, methods for a complete valve evaluation with echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance are reviewed, including some parameters that have recently been identified as predictors of the development of cardiomyopathy and a worse prognosis.
