Stress echocardiography has an evolving acceptance in the medical community, given its noninvasiveness, the lack of radiation exposure and the high diagnostic and prognostic value. It can be implemented under numerous stressors, mainly exercise and drugs. Its power is not limited to wall motion analysis, it also offers precise and confident measures of coronary flow velocities, valvular competence and gradients, and pulmonary artery pressures. Wall motion and strain evaluation can be adressed by the judicious use of tissue doppler and speckle tracking technologies. This review aims to get a comprehensive approach to stress echocardiography. A general description of this method, the hystorical milestones in its developement and the actual state of the art are depicted at first. We intend to show an integral view through clinical cases of the cardiovascular response to stressing on coronary artery disease and risk evaluation.
