Localized cardiac tamponade after cardiac surgery

localized cardiac tamponade, localized pericardial effusion, retroatrial hematomaAbstract
One of the possible complications after cardiac surgery is the development of cardiac tamponade due to localized accumulation of blood causing compression of a single cavity. In these cases, the clinical presentation is usuallyatypical, making diagnosis difficult. Transthoracic echocardiography clarifies the problem in most cases, but sometimes it is not sufficient in case of a limited acoustic window. The use of other imaging methods, and especially transesophageal echocardiography, should be considered to rule out tamponade in a postoperative patient who develops shock without a clear cause.
