deep venous thrombosis, venous ultrasonography.Abstract
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is common and, associated with pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE), is the third leading cause of cardiovascular death after acute myocardial infarction and stroke, and the leading cause of cardiovascular death in hospital. With clinical suspicion, the mandatory initial imaging method will be ultrasound, which has high sensitivity (> 90%) and specificity (> 95%). Lack of venous compressibility is the main diagnostic element. Direct visualization of the thrombus will be highly specific for DVT.
