Platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome due to patent foramen ovale diagnosed by echocardiography

Abstract

We present the case of a 71-year-old woman admitted for episodes of dyspnoea and desaturation with postural variation, characterised by desaturation when standing and improvement when lying down, suggestive of platypnoea-orthodeoxia syndrome. Transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography revealed a large patent foramen ovale with a significant shunt. Closure of the defect using an Amplatzer™-type device completely resolved the symptoms.
