Since the 1970s, ultrasound has been used as a guide for adequate cannulation of central venous access. This technique has been shown to greatly improve the safety of percutaneous interventional procedures. Due to the wide availability of ultrasound devices that we have today, their use has become popular in all clinical settings, from the emergency unit to the operating room. We present a brief review of the technique.
