Diastolic dysfunction: beyond the left ventricle

Diastolic dysfunction, echocardiography, heart failure with preserved ejection fractionAbstract
The term diastolic dysfunction arises from the existence of patients with heart failure and preserved ejection fraction. In current medical literature, the term is reserved for patients with ventricular involvement that alters relaxation
or compliance, the two ventricular diastolic properties.
There are other diastolic determinants of ventricular filling: preload, atria, arrhythmias, atrioventricular valves, and the pericardium. Its involvement can alter filling and generate diastolic dysfunction that will not have its origin in
the ventricle. We believe that it is convenient to known the ventricular diastolic properties and to study both of them in patients with heart failure and preserved ejection fraction.
