Abstract

The assessment and management of a patient in shock can be very challenging and requires extensive knowledge of the pathophysiology involved in their development to establish the most appropriate support while avoiding causing harm. On the one hand, an adequate etiological treatment is required, but also an optimal management of the hemodynamic state which can vary from fluid challenge, use of vasopressors to depletive treatment and of course the combination of them. This decision should not be made empirically but rather based on qualitative and quantitative estimates using the tools we have at hand, one of the most important being both cardiac and multifocal ultrasound, since it allows us to perform an integration of the venous and arterial sites using Doppler.
