Abstract

The left atrial appendage is the most frequently embolic source found in patients with atrial fibrillation and stroke. In the postoperative time of cardiac surgery, the prevalence of atrial fibrillation is high. The exclusion of the left atrial appendage has emerged as a potential method to reduce ischemic events in the postoperative time of cardiac surgery. Different surgical techniques have been developed and used with variable success rates, without definitive evidence to support their routine indication for stroke reduction in patients with atrial fibrillation and cardiac surgery.
