The double-orifice mitral valve is an extremely rare congenital condition. The exact incidence is unknown when it is not associated with other abnormal conditions. Thus, this cardiac anomaly rarely occurs as an isolated disease and is usually associated with other congenital heart diseases. The abnormal fusion of the endocardial cushions with abnormal development of the mitral valve during the delamination process appears to be the embryological explanation for this condition. Echocardiography is the modality of choice for diagnosis. Management is related to the type and severity of mitral valve dysfunction, with mitral regurgitation being the predominant finding.
